However, the Deadly Six eventually rebel against Eggman after Sonic accidentally destroys the conch Eggman used to control them. This forces a temporary, uneasy alliance between Sonic and Eggman to stop the Deadly Six from destroying the world.

While criticized for shallow characterization, their boss battles are mechanically diverse.
Inspired by Super Mario Galaxy , the game features a hexagonal, satellite-based world map. Players select levels from floating islands, unlocking new paths using animals and rings collected in-game.
