The voguing, the categories, the legendary walks—this was created by Black and Latinx trans women and gay men as a refuge from a world that rejected them. The entire lexicon of "realness," "reading," and "shade" comes from this underground world. Mainstream culture only caught up when Madonna released a song in 1990. The community had been living it for decades.
