This is where the film earns its darker reputation. Bella’s pregnancy progresses at an accelerated rate, physically destroying her from the inside. The film does not shy away from body horror. Bella becomes gaunt, her bones break, and the fetus drains her life force. This act culminates in a traumatic birth scene and Bella’s inevitable transformation into a vampire to save her life.
