Directed by Justin Lin, Star Trek Beyond is the 13th film in the Star Trek franchise and the third installment in the reboot series, following Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). The movie follows Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine), Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the USS Enterprise crew as they encounter a new threat in the form of Krall (Johan Brück), a ruthless alien warlord who seeks to destroy the Enterprise and exploit the planet Delta Vega.
The mission quickly goes south when they are lured into an uncharted nebula. A massive swarm of "bees"—small, ship-shredding drones—destroys the Enterprise in a spectacular sequence. Stranded on the hostile planet Altamid, the crew is separated. Kirk and Chekov try to survive while Spock and Bones (McCoy) provide the film's comedic and emotional heart as they bicker through the wilderness. They eventually team up with , a scavenger who has built a home inside an old, crashed Starfleet ship, the USS Franklin .
